Gibson Century Lapsteel plan/project is another easy to build instrument. Ours is made from English Oak with a sycamore fretboard and ebony/black plastic inlay. Classic Art Deco style instrument and a very unusual lap steel. Scale length is 22.5' as per the original and the pickup is By Entwistle-P90 type. Original was fitted with moulded plastic covers to the headstock and Bridge/pickup and these have been omitted as they are not items that are practical to make at home and the design functions perfectly without them. Machine heads are Kluson style with button heads. Finish is Celulose and the bridge is a slightly modded stop tail.
The design is slightly unusual as it has an additional tone control with a HF bypass to remove some low frequency. The build is laid out in the slide show below. It is actually a hollow body design but easy to make from planks of Maple with no wood bending required as the sides are cut from solid. Alternative P90 pickup can be used.The actual pickup used on this one is a Baytone Charlie Christian CR2 made by ourselves and the perfect vintage match for this design.
